Overview
The HPE Synergy D3940 Storage Module is a direct-attached storage module with 40 small form factor (SFF) drive bays designed for use in HPE 12000 Synergy frames. It provides combinable storage for up to 10 compute modules in a single frame via HPE Synergy 12Gb SAS connectivity modules. Synergy storage is optimised for use as a direct-attached storage array or as software-defined storage using HPE StoreVirtual VSA or similar solutions. HPE Synergy is a single infrastructure comprised of pools of physical and virtual compute, storage and fabric resources and a single management interface that allows IT to instantly assemble and reassemble resources in any configuration. As the foundation for a new kind of business infrastructure, HPE Synergy eliminates hardware and operational complexity so IT can deliver infrastructure to applications faster and more flexibly with precision. Synergy storage allows multiple drive types to be configured in the same storage module to support a variety of workloads. HPE Synergy D3940 storage modules support a range of 12G SAS or 6G *SATA HDD and SSD intelligent drives. The storage module connects to the compute modules in the frame via Synergy 12 Gb SAS connectivity modules. Any number of drive bays in the storage module can be combined with any compute module that includes an intelligent array controller connected to the SAS fabric to make efficient use of available drives. Synergy Storage can scale up to 200 SFF drives in a single HPE Synergy 12000 frame using five storage modules. Adding a second I/O adapter and a second SAS connection module provides a redundant path for SAS drives within the storage module to ensure high availability. The modular design of the Synergy D3940 storage module allows it to slide out of the frame to service drives or I/O adapters without interrupting the operation of other drives within the module. In addition, the Synergy D3940 storage module is optimised for solid state drives, using high performance SAS connectivity with sixteen 12 Gb/s SAS channels. As a result, a single Synergy storage module can deliver up to eight times the bandwidth of other JBOD options, up to 2M IOPs.

Within the framework, administrators can create virtual JBODs or virtual drives, remap connections, or change personalities for any compute module; all through the storage’s configuration file. The D3940 Storage Module and 12Gb SAS Connection Module are fully integrated with other HPE Synergy hardware and software components and are managed and configured through HPE Synergy Composer. The D3940 Storage Module provides leading storage density and the flexibility to configure storage to meet business needs. The modular design simplifies maintainability and can be configured with dual HPE Synergy 12Gb SAS Flexible Storage I/O Adapters for high availability.

Note: SATA drives (and some Value SAS drives) have a single-port limitation, so they are more prone to failure than dual-port SAS drives. HPE recommends using dual-port SAS drives for HPE Synergy D3940 storage modules. However, not all workloads require high availability, so we will continue to offer less expensive SATA drives and Value SAS drives.
