The Cisco MDS 9148S 16G Multilayer Fabric Switch is the next generation of Cisco’s MDS 9100 series switches, offering high reliability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. This 1RU switch is compact yet powerful, with scalability ranging from 12 to 48 line-rate 16 Gbps Fibre Channel ports.
The Cisco MDS 9148S is an ideal solution for various storage environments, including standalone SANs in small departmental storage setups, top-of-the-rack switches in medium-sized redundant fabrics, and edge switches in enterprise data center core-edge topologies.
Powered by Cisco NX-OS and Cisco Prime Data Center Network Manager (DCNM) software, the Cisco MDS 9148S provides advanced storage networking features and functions. It offers ease of management and compatibility with the entire Cisco MDS 9000 Family portfolio, ensuring reliable end-to-end connectivity.
With its combination of high performance, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness, the Cisco MDS 9148S is suitable for a wide range of storage networking requirements in various environments.
The Cisco MDS 9148S offers high performance and flexibility at a low cost. It supports up to 48 autosensing Fibre Channel ports with speeds of 2, 4, 8, and 16 Gbps. Each port has dedicated 16 Gbps bandwidth. The base switch model comes with 12 ports enabled and can be upgraded with the On-Demand Port Activation license to support configurations of 24, 36, or 48 enabled ports. This switch is the first generation of NVMe-ready Fibre Channel 1RU switches, making it suitable for host connectivity in N-Port virtualization (NPV) or N-Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) core deployments.
For mission-critical deployments, the Cisco MDS 9148S offers In-Service Software Upgrades (ISSU), allowing software upgrades while Fibre Channel ports are carrying traffic. It includes dual redundant hot-swappable power supplies and fan trays for high availability. PortChannels and F-port channeling provide resiliency for Inter-Switch Link (ISL) and uplinks when operating in NPV mode. It also features hardware-based slow port detection and recovery for enhanced performance and monitoring.
Storage management is simplified with built-in network management and SAN plug-and-play capabilities. The switch can be managed through a Command-Line Interface (CLI) or Cisco Prime DCNM for SAN Essentials Edition. Cisco DCNM offers task-based wizards for simplified management of single or multiple switches and fabrics. It supports PowerOn Auto Provisioning (POAP) for automated software image upgrades and configuration file installation. Intelligent diagnostics, protocol decoding, network analysis tools, and Cisco Call Home are included for reliable performance, faster problem resolution, and reduced service costs.
The Cisco MDS 9148S provides intelligent network services and advanced traffic management. It uses virtual SAN (VSAN) technology for isolated environments within a physical fabric and offers access control lists (ACLs) for intelligent frame processing. Optional features such as fabricwide Quality of Service (QoS) and Inter-VSAN Routing (IVR) are available in the Cisco MDS 9000 Family Enterprise Package. QoS prioritizes application data traffic, while IVR facilitates resource sharing across VSANs without compromising scalability, reliability, availability, and network security.
A comprehensive network security framework is offered with the Cisco MDS 9000 Family Enterprise Package. It includes fabricwide, per-VSAN role-based Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) services using various protocols. Security features include fabric isolation, packet inspection, host-to-switch, and switch-to-switch authentication, SFTP, SSHv2, SNMPv3 with AES encryption, control-plane security, hardware-enforced zoning, broadcast zones, and FIPS 140-2 compliance.
